Forum to help families grow businesses set for April

WITH 80 percent of the businesses in the country run by families, an organization will hold a conference to help family enterprises grow and sustain their business even after the third generation of the family will take over.

The conference dubbed Family Enterprise Excellence Conference will be held on April 13 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.


The following are the resource speakers in the conference:

* Dr. Bernie Villegas, vice president of University of Asia and the Pacific, who will talk about the "Role of Family in the Business: The importance of values and family unity for the next generation?"

* Philip Tan, president of Mandaue Chamber of Commerce who will discuss about "The role of Family Culture: What can make families overcome challenges together?"

* Victor Chiongbian, chair of Fast Logistics Group, and son Willian Joseph Chiongbian II, president of Fast Logistics Group who will discuss about the "Role of Father and Son Tandem: Sharing Leadership in Growing and Professionalizing the Family Business."

* Elizabeth S. Fernando, president and chief-executive-officer of Fersal Hotel Group, who will talk about "The Role of Mother and Leader in the Businesses: Balancing dual responsibility in growing the businesses without sacrificing the needs of the family."

* Dr. Ginny L. Santiago, vice chairperson of De La Salle College of Business, who will talk about the "Role of In-laws in the Filipino Family Business: Should we or shouldn't we include our In-laws in the businesses?"

* Jacob Reuben Cabochan, acting director of Ateneo Family Development Center, whose topic is about the "Role of Managing the Family System, Family Governance: Upholding family values and ensuring family unity."

* Jesus "Gigi" Zulueta, chairman of ZMG Ward Howell and co-founder of Institute of Corporate Directors, who will discuss about "The Family's Role as Business Owners: Professionalizing the Business for longevity."

The proceeds of the conference will be used to set up a Family Enterprise Research Center, which will make a research on family enterprise and help small and enterprises (SMEs) achieve sustainability.
